Can I Smoke Marijuana Before Filler Injections?

I’m sorry, can you WHAT!? 😂🙅🏼‍♀️Alright, it’s time to have a little chat about ya’ll showing up for your filler injections HIGH! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love when you come into my office with a case of the giggles… it brightens my day! But, smoking marijuana or munching on edibles before your treatment can actually affect your results and potentially put you at risk for complications. If you found this article, it’s probably because you love your cannabis as much as the next guy or girl and you decided to see what the Google had to say about the topic before your upcoming appointment. I implore you to take a little break from the fun stuff before you receive any aesthetic treatment like filler injections.

NO Marijuana Before a Medical Procedure!

Aesthetic treatments are, in fact, medical procedures. Anything you ingest prior to a medical procedure can and will have an effect on the way your body reacts to the treatment as well as how it heals post-treatment. Marijuana has incredible medicinal properties, but conversely, it can also have a negative effect on your nervous system, immune system, healing time, as well as how you’re mentally prepared to handle any complications that could potentially (but seldom) arise during any medical treatment. I totally understand the desire to take the edge off before being poked with a long needle, but considering the fact that cannabis affects everyone differently, it might have the opposite effect on you in a new setting with added outside stressors.

Why It’s Not Safe to Get High Before Filler Injections

When you’re receiving a medical treatment, such as filler injections, we need you and your body operating on all cylinders! Marijuana has a different effect on everyone. Some people are more relaxed, while others become anxious. In the rare event that vascular occlusion (a rare but serious complication of intradermal filler injections that can lead to tissue necrosis if not identified and treated quickly) occurs, it’s best that you’re in a calm and clear-headed state-of-mind so that we can avoid a freakout and take the appropriate steps to address the issue at hand. Marijuana is known to cause paranoia and anxiety in some people. If you’re one of those people, then receiving a medical treatment in a compromised state-of-mind can be reckless and dangerous.

Cannabis has been shown to have some anticoagulant properties and can actually act as a blood thinner within the body. Marijuana does this by directly affecting the way that blood platelets clot together. Thinner blood = more bleeding at injection sites. This is also true for CBD oil and alcohol.

Additionally, you might just be too high to know what you’re really asking for! I need you sharp as a tack to ensure that I can make all of your aesthetic dreams come true and you know exactly how much filler you’re asking for, where you want it, and what you can expect post-treatment.

How Should I Prepare For Filler Injections?

  • 🍸 Lay off the sauce! Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after treatment.

  • 🌿 Please don’t get high before treatment!

  • 💊 Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, Ibuprofen and Vitamin E, as well as certain food supplements such as fish oil, licorice, garlic, ginger, ginkgo and green tea for about a week before and after treatment

  • 🧼 Please arrive for your appointment with clean skin. We will clean the treatment area prior to injection, but it’s best if you arrive make-up-free with a fresh face!

  • 🍍 Eat some pineapple! Studies suggest the bromelain naturally found in pineapple can inhibit clot formation and potentially prevent bruising after filler injections.

  • 💪🏻 Try to avoid strenuous exercises immediately before and after your treatment.
